Coventry Jaguars 8 - 21 Nene
Valley Hybrids

Sunday, June 13th 2004

A spirited home debut by the Coventry Jaguars ended in defeat as the Nene Valley Hybrids came to town.
The Jags opened in style with a huge kick-off return from Nick Surface that immediately put them in scoring position. However, the Hybrids defense wasn’t shaken by the return and the possession ended scoreless.
The Hybrids as usual opened on the ground with the backfield combination of Ricardo Givens and Buddy Williams racking up the
yardage. At the 4 fullback Paul Bruce hammered in to score. An Adam Gumbs extra point giving them the early 7-0
advantage.
The second period continued in much the same vein the Nene Valley rushing attack forcing the ball down field. At midfield
Buddy Williams swept round right end, and the play seem initially to be stopped but the deceptively strong wingback bounced
outside and out-sprinted the defense for a 45 yard score. Williams ran-in the two point conversion himself to leave it 15-0
at the half.
The second half saw the Jaguars throw deep often to no avail. A series of fumbles from both teams saw the score remain
unchanged. A clever punt from Hybrid Steve Booth saw the Jaguars pinned deep in their own territory to end the third
period.
Despite the Hybrid's swarming defense holding the Jags to a handful of first downs all game, at the start of the 4th quarter
Coventry’s James Kilby launched a deep pass, which saw Nick Surface haul-in and gallop 70 yards to score. Surface again
popped up for the two point conversion and at 15-8 the game was suddenly a more tense affair.
The Hybrids were rocked by the sudden score and despite commanding running from Givens, successive holding penalties forced
them to punt. Kilby again attacked through the air but after initial success the Jags to had to give the ball back.
Givens was now running wild and advanced the ball into fieldgoal position. However Adam Gumbs attempt was wide and the Jags
had another opportunity to steal it. Kilby once again was airing it out but was now under constant pressure. Flushed from the
pocket he was forced to scramble only to come up lame with a hamstring injury and left the game.
The new QB was greeted straight away by a thunderous Steve Booth blindside sack spilling the ball into the arms of DE Micheal
Ivers. Still on the ground the Hybrids rammed the ball up the middle with fullback Paul Bruce, before scoring again on a
Givens left side sweep. An excellent one-on-one tackle prevented Givens again breaking the goal-line on the two point
attempt.
Jaguars QB James Kilby bravely came back into the game and operated from the shotgun, but the once bitten, twice shy Hybrids
defense would not allow lightning to strike twice. The Hybrids offense took over again and ran out the clock.
The Hybrids ground attack amassed more than 250 yards on the day. Buddy Williams leading the way with a stunning 131 total
and Givens chipping in with 85.
Another excellent defensive performance saw the Jags held to 36 yards on the ground and 115 yards passing - 70 of which were on one play.
The next action for the Hybrids sees them take on the Oxford Saints at Burton Park Country Club on Sun 27th June, kick-off
2-30. The Saints will be out to try and avenge the 7-3 defeat that they suffered in Oxford.
